Which Wood-Burning Heater is Right for Me?

You’ve decided a wood-burning heater is the way to go. But now you need to pick the perfect one for your space.

There’s nothing quite like the flickering glow and the intensely gentle heat (sounds like an oxymoron, but when you know, you know) of a wood-burning sauna. The traditionalists among us would claim the only true sauna is a wood-burner. If you’re not familiar with warming your bones in this way, the process seems intimidating (especially compared to the ease of an electric heater, where all it takes is the turn of a dial!). However, with a little prep work and dedication you’ll enjoy a blissful wood-burning sauna. But first, you need to know which wood-burning heater is right for you:

The M3:

  • Holds 66 lbs. of sauna stones
  • Ideal for smaller outdoor saunas (211-460 cubic feet)
  • Fits well with the Princeton, Grandview, Lewisburg and Shenandoah saunas
  • Heater is fed from inside the sauna room
  • 18” D x 15” W x 28” H
  • Glass door (so you can enjoy that soft glow from the fire!)
  • Identical to the Pro 20, only smaller

There you have it! The choice ultimately comes down to which size you need for your space and the aesthetic appeal of the heaters. Each of our wood-burning heaters, with proper attention, can send temperatures soaring to 200°F and beyond within an hour. Not bad! While you’re deciding which heater to install, you might be interested in a few best practices for wood-burning saunas.

Wood-Burning Heater Tips and Tricks

  • Keep your heater functioning safely and efficiently by emptying the ashes from the removable ashtray between sauna uses. Once a year, disassemble your chimney and wipe the interior and exterior clean.
  • Like an electric heater, remove the stones yearly to clean out any cracked stones and debris that may have accumulated.
  • Hardwoods (locust, dry oak and birch) burn hotter, whereas softwoods (poplar, dry pine and cedar) burn faster. Softwoods work wonders for getting a fire started, but the hardwoods will keep it going.
  • Check your local ordinances to ensure zoning requirements permit wood-burning saunas.
  • All wood-burning heaters require an installation kit (protective base, surround, chimney, insulation, coverings, protective boot and rain cap) to operate. If you’re purchasing a wood-burning heater with a sauna, the installation kit is included in the package. However, if you’re looking to purchase a heater individually, you can choose to include the installation kit if you’d like.

Though an electric heater is the default option for our online store, many of our saunas can be equipped with a wood-burning stove. If you can start a simple fire, you are ready to be the proud owner of an authentic Finnish wood-burning sauna. We get it though, sometimes even “simple” fires are anything but, so we are here for all of your (wood) burning questions: 888.355.3050.
