Outdoor Sauna FAQs
Can I build my sauna anywhere?
Can I build my sauna anywhere?
We strongly recommend building your barrel sauna on a solid foundation such as concrete, pavers, decking, or even stone. If these options are unavailable to you, it is ok to use a solid and flat piece of dirt or grass. Cabins and the Cube should be built on a prepared foundation however, typically concrete is the best option.
Is my sauna safe in all weather?
Is my sauna safe in all weather?
While we did design each sauna to be weather withstanding, we strongly advise applying a stain to your sauna. A stain will create a water barrier for your sauna and will help protect the lumber's color, which is great for longevity.
Do I need to hire someone to build my sauna?
Do I need to hire someone to build my sauna?
Most of our saunas are very DIY friendly, and we have extensive guides and videos to help you through the build process. You may however need to hire a contractor or handyman in some situations, such as building some of our larger cabin saunas.
What kind of maintenance does my sauna require?
What kind of maintenance does my sauna require?
All of our outdoor saunas require very little maintenance. On a daily basis, make sure to wipe down the sauna benches, every few months wipe down the exterior of any grime or build up, and annually, check the stones for any cracks or brittleness and rinse them off.
Can I use a wood-burning heater instead of electric?
Can I use a wood-burning heater instead of electric?
While not all of our saunas offer wood burning heater options, we do allow wood burning heaters to be paired with our cabins, cubes, and large diameter barrel saunas!
How long will my sauna last?
How long will my sauna last?
The lifespan of your sauna will depend heavily on the environment it's placed in, as well as how well you maintain the sauna on a daily basis. To ensure maximum lifespan, keep up with proper maintenance, but also be sure to use the sauna on a daily basis. Typically the sauna should be run for 1-2 hours a day, 3-4 times a week, to keep the lumber and heater in great shape.
Indoor Sauna FAQs
How much clearance do I need overhead to build the sauna? My room is barely bigger than the height of the sauna!
How much clearance do I need overhead to build the sauna? My room is barely bigger than the height of the sauna!
First of all, almost anything is possible. You may have to do some drilling into the roof from inside the room versus going from the top down. You may also have to pre-build the roof guards before adding them to the sauna. Though it can be done with slimmer margins, the most ideal amount of space to work with is at least 12″ above the sauna when you go to build it. If you aren’t sure about your space, give us a call and we can talk through your specific scenario!
How much room should be between the sauna and any existing walls?
How much room should be between the sauna and any existing walls?
We recommend a minimum of 2” between the sauna and any walls, especially where vents are located.
Do I need to vent my sauna?
Do I need to vent my sauna?
You can read an in-depth response to this question here, but for the sake of an easy answer: yes, and the sauna includes vents! This means you do not need any additional ventilation added to the sauna. Remember the 2” clearance we talked about? This is why!
Does my sauna need to be further away from the wall if it is drywall or concrete?
Does my sauna need to be further away from the wall if it is drywall or concrete?
Nope! The 2” clearance rule of thumb stands for any material!
Should I be concerned about moisture on the exterior of my sauna? Will my walls and floor be damaged by steam?
Should I be concerned about moisture on the exterior of my sauna? Will my walls and floor be damaged by steam?
There is no need to worry! If you decide to take a wet sauna (sprinkling water on the hot sauna stones), you don’t need to think twice about the surrounding space. The sauna is not a steam room, and the dry heat helps quickly dissipate the steam. It does not take much water to add that refreshing burst of humidity in the sauna room!
I read that indoor saunas do not have a floor. I am concerned that my sauna will not heat up well because of this! What should I do?
I read that indoor saunas do not have a floor. I am concerned that my sauna will not heat up well because of this! What should I do?
It is standard for traditional saunas to use your existing floor. We have recommendations for the best material to place underneath the sauna. The biggest thing to keep in mind: don’t place the sauna on carpet. Also, there is no need to worry about the lack of a built-in floor hindering the heat in your sauna. The heat will naturally rise to the top, so the floor will always be cooler than the rest of the room.
