Installing an indoor sauna is a fantastic way to create a personal wellness retreat inside your home. Whether integrating a freestanding sauna or building a custom sauna, proper preparation ensures optimal performance, safety, and longevity.Β Step 1: Choose the Right Location Before installing your sauna, consider the following factors to select the best location: βοΈ Accessibility: Pick a space that is easy to reach and provides privacy, ideally near a bathroom or shower for post-sauna rinsing. βοΈ Structural Integrity: Ensure the floor can support the saunaβs weight, especially in multi-story homes. βοΈ Ventilation: Good ventilation is essential to allow for fresh air intake and moisture removal. βοΈ Available Space: Determine the size of your sauna based on your needs and available room space. Common indoor sauna locations include: Home gyms Master bathrooms Basements Spas or wellness areas Thinking about placing an indoor sauna outdoors? Indoor saunas are not designed to withstand outdoor elements like rain or snow. If youβre considering an outdoor installation, keep in mind: Covering is required: A covered patio or pergola is ideal. Glass retains less heat: Indoor saunas have more glass than outdoor models, so in colder climates, upgrading to a more powerful heater is recommended. No enclosed floor: Indoor saunas do not come with flooring. If placing it on a slatted deck, install a sealed platform underneath to prevent drafts. Step 2: Frame Insulate the Space If you are building a custom indoor sauna, proper framing and insulation are key to heat retention and moisture control. βοΈ Frame the area: Use wood framing to create the sauna enclosure. βοΈ Insulate walls and ceiling: Use high-quality insulation like fiberglass or rock wool to maintain heat efficiency. βοΈ Install a vapor barrier: A foil-faced vapor barrier should be installed to prevent moisture from seeping into surrounding walls. Freestanding saunas do not require framing but should still be placed in a well-ventilated, dry area.Β Step 3: Electrical Considerations for Your Heater If you choose an electric sauna heater, proper installation is crucial for safety and compliance. βοΈ Power source: Ensure your chosen location has access to the appropriate electrical supply. βοΈ Consult an electrician: All electrical work must be performed by a licensed electrician who understands local codes and regulations. βοΈ Cost considerations: Electrical installation costs vary based on: Distance from your sauna to your electrical panel Local electrician rates Cost of wiring and material βοΈ Get multiple quotes: We recommend contacting 2-3 electricians for estimates before starting installation. Step 4: Prepare the Floor Your indoor sauna can be placed on almost any solid surfaceβincluding concrete, tile, and laminate. However, avoid placing it directly on carpet or hardwood flooring, as moisture and heat can cause damage. βοΈ Use a waterproof surface: Tile, concrete, or other water-resistant materials are best. βοΈ Ensure proper drainage: A slight floor slope can direct water toward a drain in areas with higher moisture. βοΈ Install a sealed platform if necessary: If placing the sauna on a slatted deck, build a sealed platform underneath to eliminate drafts. Step 5: Plan for Final Details Before installation, consider these final touches: βοΈ Door Size Β Placement: Ensure the sauna door is positioned for easy access. βοΈ Benches Β Seating: Plan your seating arrangement based on your comfort and available space. βοΈ Lighting: Use low-wattage, sauna-safe lighting to enhance the atmosphere. Step 6: Shipping Delivery Information All Almost Heaven Saunas ship within the continental U.S. via freight service. Hereβs what to expect: βοΈ Delivery Timeline: Most saunas ship within 2-4 weeks, depending on the model and inventory availability. βοΈ Freight Delivery: The sauna will arrive in multiple flat-packaged boxes on a large truck. You will need to unload and move the boxes to your assembly location. βοΈ Curbside Drop-Off: The freight company will deliver the sauna to the curb or driveway, not inside the home or backyard. βοΈ Assembly Required: Most of our saunas are designed for DIY assembly with easy-to-follow instructions. Learn moreEMFs and Infrared Saunas: Understanding the Science Behind Sauna Health
Saunas are an ideal place to rejuvenate and relax. They provide many health benefits that will aid in the immediate and long term health goals of its user. If you are a sauna enthusiast, chances are you are a health and wellness-minded individual. You care about your body and invest in ways to improve your overall health. Whether you are a fan of the traditional sauna experience and enjoying a good steam, or are interested in infrared heating panels and the benefits they offer, you want to ensure you are doing what is best for you and your body. To find confidence in this, it is important to conduct the necessary research and to educate yourself on the variety of sauna options. With hybrid models, you get the luxury of being able to choose between both types of saunas to reap all the benefits that traditional and infrared saunas have to offer! What Are EMFβs: EMFs, also known as electromagnetic fields, are a common topic sauna enthusiasts research when looking into infrared and hybrid sauna models. EMF is the energy that is created when electricity and magnetism is combined, and can be found all around us in our everyday lives due to both natural and man-made sources. For example, you come into contact with EMF by simply standing outside in the sunlight, making a phone call, blow drying your hair, listening to music on a bluetooth device, vacuuming your house, and so many more ways.Β It is important to note that EMFs can be categorized as either ionizing or non-ionizing. When concern is raised regarding EMFs, it is commonly due to our knowledge of the harmful radiation that can come from sources in the ionizing category, such as x-rays and UV rays from sunlight. EMFs in the ionizing category have higher frequency radiation, which can hold the potential to cause cellular and DNA damage to the average human.Β The EMFs in the non-ionizing category are far less harmful to humans. These EMFs have lower frequencies, which are generally perceived as being harmless to humans due to their lack of potency. These low frequency non-ionizing EMFs radiate from devices such as your computer, cellphone, TV, and other similar devices. We expose ourselves to these EMFs for hours on a daily basis.Β Infrared EMFβs:Β How do EMFs relate to infrared saunas? The infrared heating panels use infrared light to create heat. Although we cannot see infrared light, we can feel it in the form of heat as it warms us at a cellular level. This can easily be compared to the type of heat you feel standing in a ray of sunlight. The surrounding environment may not necessarily be hot, but you are still able to feel the warmth. We can also find infrared heating elsewhere, such as infant incubators used in hospital care units. When developing our infrared saunas, we were careful to ensure they have low EMF to provide the many benefits of an infrared sauna without causing the harmful effects of high EMF. Given the two categories of ionizing and non ionizing previously mentioned, which are relatively extreme from one another, you may be asking yourself where an infrared sauna finds itself on the EMF spectrum. It may surprise you to find that your cell phone puts you into contact with a higher frequency EMF than an infrared sauna ever will.Β Our Low EMF carbon heater panels range between an average of 5mG-10mG at about two inches from the heater panel, our Ultra Low EMF carbon heater panels range between4 3mG-5mG, and our Near Zero EMF/Full Spectrum models range at less than 3mG (NIR heaters range at about 5mG-7mG at the same approximate 2 inches). To make this information a bit more relatable, we have provided a chart below to show a variety of common household EMF sources and their mG ratings. ο»ΏComparison Chart:Β Benefits of Infrared Saunas:Β Unlike a traditional sauna that heats the room as a whole, an infrared sauna directly penetrates into the bodyβs tissue to produce perspiration. An infrared sauna user is able to achieve the same heat therapy benefits as a traditional sauna, but at lower, more tolerable temperatures. This results in easier breathing and less of a burden on the heart. There are many benefits to reap from using an infrared sauna. As part of the natural cooling process, the body will begin to perspire as it is introduced to the heat of the sauna. Through the perspiration process, acid and waste residue like toxins, sodium, alcohol, nicotine, cholesterol, and the potentially carcinogenic heavy metals are removed from the cells (especially zinc, lead, nickel, cadmium, etc.). The pores of our skin open and discharge waste products shedding any old skin cells leaving the skin glowing and clean, with improved tone, elasticity, texture, and color.Β Infrared sauna users may also experience health benefits such as reduced stress, relaxed muscles, pain relief from Rheumatoid Arthritis, increased blood circulation, cardiovascular conditioning, cleared rashes and acne, reduced cellulite, enhanced skin tone, among many other benefits.Β With this newfound knowledge and information, you are now well-equipped to make an educated decision on which sauna type is right for you. You now have a thorough understanding of what EMFs are, how they relate to infrared saunas, and the many benefits you can receive from using an infrared sauna.Β Here at Almost Heaven Saunas, we have an excellent selection of both infrared and hybrid saunas! Β Hey there, language lover! Ever hit a wall trying to find that perfect translation? You're not alone! Quite often, our beautifully diverse cultures and histories bless us with unique words that defy a simple one-word translation.Β Take the Finnish sauna term 'LΓΆyly' for instance, or its German cousin 'Aufguss'. We all love a good sauna, right? But, oh boy, this term is a tough one to translate into English!Β We're totally smitten with 'LΓΆyly' and we know you are too. So, we're on a mission to capture its true essence for all our sauna-loving customers.Β If you've tried to Google 'LΓΆyly', you probably got hit with a rather unsatisfying definition in English like this: LΓΆyly: noun 1. theΒ steamΒ that rises from theΒ saunastoveΒ (kiuas) or theΒ heatΒ of the sauna. (wiktionary) Β Google would have you believe that "LΓΆyly" translates to the steam rising from a sauna stove. But that's like saying a book is just a bunch of words. It doesn't capture the soul of the term, the Finnish love affair with the sauna that's as potent as a steamy embrace.Β In Finland, if the proverbial tar, spirits, or sauna can't heal you, then nothing will. Sauna isn't just a pastime, itβs life, health, and community. And LΓΆyly? It's the very heartbeat of the sauna experience. It's that magical moment when water kisses hot rocks and transforms into a cloud of steam. It's not just about the steam though, itβs the essence, the rejuvenation, the soothing release. LΓΆyly is an experience, a sanctuary of healing and reflection, of companionship and love. As the Finns say, "Leave your worries with your shoes." We've seen manyΒ attempts to translate LΓΆyly into English, from the lackluster "vaporization" and "sauna bath" to the more poetic "aromatic steam treatment" and "spirit." Each attempt, however imperfect, is a testament to the profound beauty of the word. So, as you bask in the warm embrace of your sauna, let LΓΆyly wash over you. Learn moreFinnish Sauna Folklore: Spirits and Guardians of Finnish Bathhouses
In the heart of Finnish culture lies a tradition steeped in mysticism and lore, where the steamy embrace of the sauna is not just about cleansing the body but also the soul. Sauna folklore, an integral part of Finland's heritage, brings to life the enchanting tales of spirits and guardians known as "Saunatonttu" or Sauna Elves. These mystical beings, believed to inhabit the warm quarters of Finnish bathhouses, have captivated the imaginations of many, adding a layer of intrigue and respect to the sauna experience. In our last post we took you on a trip to Finland where we explored the layers of culture, variety and history interwoven in the Finnish sauna. Today, let's embark on a journey to uncover the rich tapestry of sauna folklore, exploring the customs, rituals, and tales that have been passed down through generations. The Enigmatic Saunatonttu At the heart of Finnish Sauna culture lies the mysticism of the Saunatonttu, the elf-like spirits believed to dwell within the warm walls of the sauna. These enigmatic guardians, often depicted as small, elderly figures with flowing beards, are much more than mere folklore; they embody the essence of the sauna's sacred space. The Saunatonttu are revered as protectors, ensuring the well-being and safety of those who enter their domain. Their presence is a testament to the deep, spiritual significance the sauna holds in Finnish tradition, bridging the tangible world with that of the mystical. Understanding the role of the Saunatonttu sheds light on the intricate relationship between humans and these guardians. Far from being whimsical tales, these beliefs underscore the importance of treating the sauna with the utmost respect and care. The Saunatonttu, while guardians, also demand acknowledgment through rituals and customs, fostering a unique bond between the physical and the spiritual realms. This bond is central to maintaining the purity and harmony that the sauna is known for, illustrating the profound connection Finns have with nature and the unseen forces that inhabit their world. As we peel back the layers of sauna folklore, the Saunatonttu emerge not just as mythical figures, but as integral components of the Finnish sauna experience, embodying the values of respect, protection, and harmony that are at the core of this cherished tradition. Β Rituals and Offerings: Showing Gratitude to the Sauna Spirits Paying homage to the Saunatonttu, or Sauna Elves, is a cherished practice deeply rooted in Finnish tradition. This act of respect and gratitude involves the thoughtful gesture of leaving offerings for these guardians of the sauna. Common tokens include a bowl of milk, slivers of butter, or slices of bread, carefully placed in a corner of the sauna as a gift. This practice is born out of a belief that by showing appreciation to the Saunatonttu, one invites good fortune and ensures the protection of both the sauna and its users. This ritual transcends mere custom; it is a tangible expression of the symbiotic relationship between humans and the spiritual custodians of the sauna. It embodies the principle that maintaining a respectful rapport with the unseen world can enrich our lives. By partaking in this tradition, sauna-goers not only honor the heritage of Finnish sauna culture but also contribute to the atmosphere of purity and harmony that defines these sacred spaces. Engaging in such rituals fosters a sense of connection, not only to the rich tapestry of Finnish folklore but also to the universal human experience of seeking harmony with the natural and spiritual realms. Itβs a poignant reminder that in showing gratitude to the Saunatonttu, individuals participate in a timeless exchange of respect and care, reinforcing the enduring bond between the physical and mystical worlds that the sauna so beautifully encapsulates. Β The Sauna: A Sacred Space of Purity and Harmony The sauna, in Finnish culture, transcends the mere act of bathing. It is revered as a sanctified place where both the physical and the ethereal can be purified. This elevated status of the sauna is deeply intertwined with the presence of the Saunatonttu, guardians who underscore the sanctity of these spaces. In maintaining the traditions and customs around sauna usage, there is a distinct emphasis on creating an environment of respect and tranquility. The serene ambiance is not just for the benefit of those seeking solace within its wooden walls; it's also a gesture of reverence towards the sauna spirits, ensuring their continued protection and goodwill. The practice of minimizing noise and leaving behind the external world's distractions enriches the sauna experience, making it a unique retreat for introspection and rejuvenation. This quietude is believed to be critical for nurturing the wellbeing of both visitors and the Saunatonttu, fostering an atmosphere where harmony prevails. It's a space where the mundane meets the mystical, allowing for a deep connection to self, to nature, and to the unseen guardians watching over the sacred ritual of sauna bathing. The customs and rituals practiced within this hallowed space serve as a bridge between the past and the present, ensuring the preservation of a cultural heritage that honors the delicate balance between human beings and the spiritual realm. The sauna remains a cornerstone of Finnish identity, embodying the principles of purity, respect, and harmony that resonate deeply within the Finnish soul. Β Folk Tales and Legends: The Saunatonttu in Finnish Lore One intriguing legend tells of a family who, through neglect and disregard, angered their sauna's resident Saunatonttu. The spirit, feeling disrespected, caused the family's sauna experiences to be less rejuvenating, and misfortunes befell them. It was only when they recognized their oversight, performing the customary rituals of respect and offering, that harmony was restored. This tale, among many others, illustrates the deeply rooted belief in the reciprocity between humans and the spiritual guardians of the sauna.Β Such folklore serves not merely as entertainment but as a vehicle for imparting wisdom about the significance of respect, cleanliness, and the spiritual dimensions of everyday spaces. By heeding the lessons encapsulated in these stories, individuals learn to maintain a harmonious balance within their surroundings, ensuring that the sanctity of the sauna and its protectors is preserved.Β The narratives surrounding the Saunatonttu not only underscore the cultural importance of these spirits but also reinforce the interconnectedness of all elements within the sauna's sphere. Through these tales, the essence of Finnish sauna folklore continues to inspire and guide, weaving a timeless connection between the past and the present. Β The Modern Sauna: Keeping the Spirit Alive In our fast-paced, digital age, the ancient traditions of the sauna, along with its mystical protectors, continue to flourish, anchoring us to cultural roots that many fear might otherwise be lost. Far from being relegated to history, the practices surrounding theSaunatonttu have found their way into the heart of contemporary sauna experiences, bridging the gap between the old and the new with grace and warmth. Families across Finland, and indeed globally, keep the spirit of the Saunatonttu alive through the continued observance of age-old customs and the heartfelt offerings left in cozy sauna corners.Β This ongoing commitment to sauna folklore does more than preserve a piece of Finnish heritage; it acts as a testament to the timeless appeal of connecting with something larger than ourselves. The modern sauna, whether it's perched by a lakeside in Finland or integrated into a health spa thousands of miles away, serves as a sanctuary where the hustle of everyday life can be momentarily set aside. In these sacred spaces, the rituals of quietude, cleanliness, and offerings to the Saunatonttu are not mere formalities but acts of mindfulness, inviting peace and protection into our lives. As the warmth of the sauna embraces all who enter, so does the enduring spirit of the Saunatonttu, encouraging us to slow down, respect our surroundings, and cherish the invisible threads that link us to nature, tradition, and each other. It is in the gentle steam and the soft crackle of the sauna's wood that the whispers of the past meet the hopes of the future, keeping the enchanting world of sauna folklore vibrantly alive in our modern era. Embracing Sauna Folklore: A Global Invitation The allure of Finnish sauna folklore, with its mystical Saunatonttu and age-old traditions, extends a warm invitation to people across the world. This rich cultural tapestry, woven with tales of guardianship and respect for the unseen, encourages us to delve into a practice that is both deeply spiritual and refreshingly physical. Sauna folklore isn't just for those born into it; it offers a gateway for anyone eager to experience a connection to something beyond the tangible, to partake in rituals that foster purity, harmony, and respect for our surroundings. As saunas become a beloved feature in various cultures, integrating this folklore invites us to not only revel in the soothing warmth and steam but also to immerse ourselves in a practice that bridges the gap between the ancient and the contemporary. By welcoming the wisdom of the Saunatonttu into our sauna practices, we're not merely participating in a Finnish tradition; we're embracing a global heritage that speaks to universal values of mindfulness and care for the spaces we hold sacred. So, whether you're stepping into a sauna for the first time or you're a seasoned aficionado, the enchanting world of sauna spirits and their guardians awaits you, offering a rich, immersive experience that transcends cultural boundaries and connects us all in the steam's embrace.

Learn moreHow To Prepare Your Indoor Sauna Space
